I laughed out loud at TURTLESHELL
@Andrzej I took it as a reference to a very well known play on the classic American pun, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. I may be speaking from my musical background bubble, but “If it ain’t baroque, don’t fix it” is very common pun here.
A great reminder that the rebus does not always require the rebus key. I found the revealer to make very clear that the lines were the laughs! Loved this one! I tried botox once a couple years ago. Not for laugh lines, but for my forehead wrinkles. Before, I noticed how nice and smooth people’s foreheads looked. So I got it and my forehead was entirely frozen. And all I could notice was how expressive and beautiful people’s faces were! I’m grateful for the experience. It made me very excited to embrace my hard-earned laugh lines and expression for years to come. (And I still think the still and smooth face are beautiful too, you do you <3 …. Maybe I will try a smaller amount of units in the future, who knows)
I will echo folks saying Brainstorm = Idea didn’t make sense. I do not argue that “brainstorm” is a noun, but rather that it does not fit the definition of “idea”. The noun of “brainstorm”, in my experience, has always been defined as a group trying to generate an idea, not the idea produced itself. I have never heard anyone say “I had a brainstorm” *in the same* way one would say “I had an idea”. If I said “I had a brainstorm” I would mean “I took time trying to generate an idea”. I ultimately understood the clue in its context and crossings, but that is my nit for the day. Regardless, a very fun Tuesday!
@Tay Or rather, the former is classic American *saying*, the latter being a pun on that saying.
@Volta The rebus is a very classic crossword mechanism, it did throw me the first time I encountered one though. A learning curve for a new hobby I suppose. It does seem to be quite a decisive element among crosswords new and experienced
@Moira Was that the full clue elsewhere? On the app it just reads “No no” and I interpreted it as simply implying a double negative.
