The problem with this puzzle is that it’s backwards. The starred clues’ answers must be deduced by crossers before the 4 duplicated letters can be “goned”. The clues are useless until after you’ve already got the answers. 4 gone is 2 clever by half.
TIL that we Americans have ruined another word: Accouterment is an accepted spelling.
@Eric This is a bad review (two ways). If you’re going to say something like this, at least tell us what drive you to this conclusion. What did you dislike so much about the puzzle?
@Francis You mean LOL, of course. 😆
@The X-Phile I was going to say that only kings believe in the divine right of kings and the rest believe in the tip of a sword, but then I opened the NYT and, well yeah, I can’t explain it either, X-Phile.
Seems a stretch to say that NBA players work to get tips? Good puzzle overall, though.
@pmom Agreed. This repeated misspelling that has worked its way into the dictionary was not my favorite. I put it in the same category as educated people using the pronunciation “processEEZ”: Correct now only because it’s been misused so much during my lifetime, but shouldn’t rhyme with indices.
