@Nancy I believe the trick is in the ambiguity of the "out" preposition. Because it's in the phrase "when the lights go out", the impulse is to parse it as the lights turning "off", when actually it's referring to "taking/putting the Christmas lights out [in the yard/on the tree/etc]."

@Barry Ancona I get that, but personally I had a hard time with today's puzzle overall, so the crosses didn't help much. Did I miss a memo that we should all post comments in verse today?
