@Christina H I was hoping this would be included in the column's "Tricky Answers" for a little backstory. I've never heard it either. But it looks like that's exactly what happened on 11/12/2023 when this clue also appeared and the column noted: "21A. A SOU was a French coin of low denomination, so to say that something is “Not worth a SOU” means that it isn’t worth anything to you. (I’d say this clue phrase has fallen about as far out of use as the denomination it cites.)"

@Chris Not much to explain. "Doughnut" is the original word, while "donut" is an acceptable alternate spelling. The NYT style guide prefers the former.

The "single line of diamonds" clue had me prepared for something like poker, with that TENNISBRACELET representing a flush. So it took me a while to figure out why TWENTYONE was materializing instead of some poker variant! And I can't be the only one here who first learned the word ENDUE today, so thanks for that!

@Xword Junkie Not if you take "cracker" to simply mean a thing that cracks. After all, if eggs were the "crackees" then literal crackers would also be crackees. I've never known a Saltine to crack anything else.
