What a beast this was! Finally got that "four" had to be "gone" from the starred clues and sussed it out, but missed that they were four of the same letter, yeesh. My quibble as a Sanskritist is that the name APU is probably not of Sanskrit origin, and if it is it's not related to any root meaning "extraordinary." (It could be derived from āp, meaning "water," but I doubt it. Great puzzle! Took me way over my Thursday average to finish.

@Rahul Sanskritist here, and you're absolutely right, I can think of no Sanskritic derivation that yields "extraordinary." I doubt the name is of Sanskrit origin at all. Possible connections might be āp "to obtain" or maybe ap "water" (related to Latin aqua) but these are stretches. Fun puzzle though! Kicked my butt overall.
