As someone who works in labor and delivery, “epi” would refer to epinephrine, not an epidural. Definitely not something we want to be giving in the delivery room. Furthermore, an epidural is not an injection, it is a continuous infusion. I’ve never commented before, but this clue was extremely frustrating in its inaccuracy.

@Barry Ancona In ten years, I have never had a patient refer to an epidural as an “epi.” So yes, that could be true, but it’s not ubiquitous. And Momo, yes you are of course right that “epidural” actually refers to the epidural space and not the medication or the method of giving it and injections are occasionally given in the USA in delivery rooms (for this clue is not referring to other OR procedures). I would still say that for the sake of accuracy of an NYT clue, this one is not at all great.
