@Barry Ancona Indeed I did sir, I'm just sour I couldn't figure out the trick on my own. @Renegator is right - I'll come around to the joy of rebus puzzles soon enough.
Our constructor's name is apt - this was a Golden puzzle! Trickiest part for me was the bottom left corner - you're in for trouble if your chosen OPEC member is OMAN and not IRAN. Having fixed that mistake, solved faster than usual.
@Julia Right? I now have a habit of cluing RITA ORA whenever a pop song I don't know is mentioned. To this day, I don't think I've never actually heard her work.
Was pleased to solve GALOIS - finally, I can say my math degree was worth something. If only I had studied voice actresses and 60s pop stars too, else I would have solved this puzzle :-) Thanks for a challenge Mr. Walden - hope to solve your next one!
The clue for "UNDIE RUNS", in the sense that I understood it, struck me as too crass for the NYT. But that minor bit of pearl clutching aside, a thoroughly enjoyable Friday solve - thanks Rafael and Matt!
Man, Count CHOCULA defeated me today. "What may be smelt" too, after seeing ORE in a recent puzzle. That was a tough one! Thanks Mr. Ezersky, and hope to solve your next puzzle
@Bruno Careful though, those circled tiles don't *always* call for rebuses!
Easy theme (for a whiskey drinker), but tricky puzzle! WEND/READE and EMU/FAUN were nightmarish crosses. Thanks for the puzzle Mr. Ayas
That was fun! My solve rate for Thursday puzzles definitely needed a boost. The bottom left corner, with FANT, is what clued me in. :-) SKIMOFFTHETOP gave me flashbacks to The Sopranos - time to watch a few clips of the best TV drama ever made. Happy Thursday all
That was fun! The 🎱 theme is nice because it's relevant to many generations, including 90's kids. (Gen Z and Alpha, did you have this toy too?) I'm beginning to feel old, because I initially thought "hairy halloween costume" was ALF. :-) Can anyone explain why "Receipts" was GATE?
Even as a young person, I'm too ossified to know YASSIFY. Usually crosswords are a good way to escape our depraved and vain social media culture for a few minutes – not today! Thanks to Ms. Zawistowski regardless!
That was a great puzzle! MAHON was a tough one - especially since "aho" feels like a rare construction in Spanish. With my fuzzy sense of Balearic geography, was stuck for a while thinking it was IBIZA.
@Barry Ancona Sure, but it's dated. Nobody under the age of 35 says "my sweets". A younger solver like me might sooner reach for HOS than HON – a sad commentary. But it's still a fair clue IMO.
@Francis Thank you! I was thinking of receiving people, not revenue. That's a good clue.
@Steve L Feels like the 20th time to me! Thanks for the fact check.
@JohnWM I asked my date to "prom" only one decade ago and no definite article was needed. Maybe a generational thing. To use the definite article there sounds a little unnatural to my ears, even though we certainly went to "the game" or "the pep rally".
@Mango You aren't alone - I didn't get that clue either, and had to rely on the cross-solve. Puzzle was quite enjoyable to me though -- if it's not enjoyable, are you solving for the right reasons?
@Mean Old Lady LAMAR JACKSON is playing in the NFL right now and has a very high profile. As far as sports clues go, that's not such a bad one IMO.
Don't understand how a newbie to crosswords is supposed to know that a rebus should be used here, or even what a rebus is. But then again, I guess Thursday crosswords aren't meant to be accessible.
