Any other lifelong Philadelphians learn that we have a landmark called JFK plaza today? Despite 41 years living here and working within 2 blocks of Love Park for 11 years, if you made me guess where that is, I'd have said New York.
After my first pass I only had 15 answers. Turned on auto check and 9 of them were wrong. Oh well; can't complete them all.
I hit recommend, then unrecommend, then hit it again just so I could recommend this twice.
I appreciated all the rebuses because it was apparent very early on that there was a trick, so I knew to search the clues to find out what it was. Once I found it, it was a breeze! Now I have to ask my friend if we can switch from Mexican to pizza for dinner since it's all I can think about!
I had a really rough time mentally rearranging the letters after I figured out the theme, but I'm happy Mr. T made it to the crossword two days in a row!
The day after I first saw kayak cross I had to Google it because I was fairy certain it was a weird dream I had. This gives me hope that Olympic spatula jousting is just a decade or two away!
@john ezra next time I have to try to describe my personal style I'm going with gothic hobo.
Coincidentally I spent yesterday and this morning working on another Jeff Chen puzzle, To Be Continued from October 23, 2022. That was a real doozy. I had a lot more fun with this one, but if you're a masochist who doesn't have enough forehead wrinkles from furrowing your brow on confusion, I recommend hitting that up in the archive!
@Vaer Same! I've been working through the archive and groan every time I see this clue, which means I do a lot of groaning!
@Julia that would be brilliant! I'm an enthusiast of all things ooky spooky. A homophone makes enough sense for Nessee since the clue acknowledges the mistaken identity, but the rest of the clues are quick fleeting sightings typical of a cryptid. Having typo worked into the revealer would have made the remaining clues add up. As is it is, it struck me as an "oh, we're just spelling the answers wrong, huh?" theme.
@SN same on Alaska roll. Maybe it depends on where you're eating. If anyone in the Philadelphia area gave me an Alaska roll with salmon on top, I'd be triple checking my bill that they didn't charge me for the wrong roll.
@Dave Munger I had a birthday earlier this month. I turned learning-slang-from-the-NYT-crossword years old, apparently. ATE really threw me since ATE IT is an answer that pops up a few times a year clued as majorly falling or majorly failing.
@Darren James Since it's a genre bender, the answer follows the bend of the grid. The answer is completed in 13 down.
