Interesting hearing that the NE was the hardest for some solvers; seeing TM was enough to bring back all the Mercury launches, and WEEDKILLER went in with just the W and D. Similarly GHOSTSTORIES and CHECKPLEASE with GHO and CH. I finished down to LON in what felt like short order but spent twice as long in the SW as the whole rest of the puzzle. BABYGROOT was a “what on earth???” answer, but I trusted all the crosses.
Not really a comment on the puzzle, which I thought was appropriately hard and fun. This is more a bug report about the web site; I couldn't find a link for that. The link from the crossword page "Read about today’s puzzle" didn't find the Gameplay page. I think the page was not named in the normal convention (daily-puzzle-yyyy-mm-dd.html); it left out the "09" for the month. Fortunately the blog listing had the (wrong) link so I could find it...
@Barry Ancona Luckily, if you printed the puzzle shortly after it was published the grid you got didn't have the circles. It really was a very satisfying "aha!" when I got the theme. I just tried printing it again now and it automagically gives you the printed-version PDF, which does have the circles.
