@Byron Yes you should read Frankenstein! 19th century horror has fewer jump scares and more “oh the humanity of it all” moments. A remarkable story for its use of language (and age of its author) but also how it speaks to issues of today: unwillingness to accept that which is strange to us, as well as man’s (woman’s) hubris — just because we can, should we? (apology and props to Michael Crichton).
