@Jim your class was wrong or you misremember, probably the latter because "gene" is often misused in lay speech. in mendelian terms, a gene is the unit of heredity that controls for a trait (pea color); an allele is the particular version of a gene that confers the specific phenotype (yellow or green). peas always have a color--that gene is always expressed, it cannot be dominant or recessive to another gene--but the yellow allele is dominant over green. by the way we have mostly green peas nowadays because farmers selectively bred out the dominant yellow allele.
