Ah, yes, a great reminder why I cancelled my games subscription a few years ago. I thought let's give it another try. When I cancelled my subscription years ago, it's because I got feedback "Don't do Thursdays until you're more experienced." Well, I am *paying* for Thursdays. I get it, the crosswords nerds slurp this up. If your goal is to be elitist and alienate new people, congratulations. If your goal is to encourage new people into the field, this falls flat. Imagine*this* is your sixth NYT crossword, how should you feel?
@Jordan today was my sixth NYT crossword puzzle. Today's puzzle didn't leave me feeling good. I get that there are pros who brag about solving it in 5 minutes using only down clues. Great for them. But how do you get others interested? This puzzle was not it. As you mention, indicating a rebus would help newcomers feel welcomed. But bragging on an unnecessarily difficult puzzle for new people isn't a welcoming environment.
