@Francis A side note about Haiti's poverty. When France agreed to independence for Haiti in 1804 after revolution, France later in 1825, using gunships as a threat, demanded reparations from Haiti for lost income, including lost slave income. Haiti agreed, literally with a gun to its head, and paid France yearly from 1825 until 1947, including payments to other debtors, mostly American, who helped finance Haiti's payments. In all, it's estimated that this "independence debt" cost Haiti around $560 million in 2022 dollars: the main reason for Haiti's poverty.
