Did anyone else have MINI for 64A, and spend 10 minutes looking for errors while glossing over the apparently believable incorrect crosses of PORG(I) and L(M)E? ...no? just me? cool cool cool
Very fun theme. A rare one where I got almost all the way through the puzzle without getting any themers (except "lambasted" through crosses), then got the revealer and everything clicked right in. TETRA instead of bETtA tied me in knots at the end.
@Andree As any Calvin and Hobbes fan knows, Boink is the sound of scientific progress.
Seeing lots of folks tripped up by the "monster home run." That confused me too, but because the most famous "monster" in baseball is Boston's Green Monster, a 30-foot wall out in LEFTFIELD at Fenway Park. I briefly tried that, and was amused when it showed up as a correct answer later in the puzzle.
@Rich Roberts X and J are 8. Q and Z are 10.
I gotta stop reading these late-week comments. Took me nearly an hour with a couple googles, and the clamors of "overly easy puzzle, where's the challenge, yawn" are as persistent as ever. Brava to you expert solvers, I'm in awe.
@JBNBPT The "turn" was flipped over. Personally, I think APPLEREVO might've made more sense
@Anthony having never heard of "IGA," and confidently having filled in "NEoPOLITAN," I spent about 50% of my solve time looking for what I had wrong.
A fun, springy theme. Didn't quite feel seasonally appropriate out here in Colorado, where we've gotten more snow last night than we did the rest of this past "winter."
Anyone else get tripped up by the tall shortstop Cruz? 6'6" Elly De La Cruz came to mind immediately; ONEIL is more of an outfielder these days. Fun, quick solve!
@Matt However, if you were to say "Shohei Ohtani leads the league in leadoff home runs this year," it would be understood to mean in the first inning only.
@Megan Baseball playoffs start this week! I'm assuming that's the reason. :)
For proper names, specifically, I count "Ernst", "Bender", "Lear", "Rey", "Oscar", and "Leo I". I suppose also "Johnny" in "Here's Johnny"? So we've got an important 20th century artist; a character from a popular TV show; a Shakespeare character; a Star Wars character and actor; a Pope (who shares a name with the current Pope); and a themer with one of the most iconic quotes in cinema. Afraid I have to disagree with both the "way too many" and "obscure" assessments.
@Bob So does AMAZONCLOUD, it turns out.
@Dana Scully That's nearly 11 years of daily crosswords. Congrats!
@Erika Also took me forever to get it. (L)OCI instead of FOCI really TRIPped me up.
AI shouldn't have anything to do with it. "Genius" just means getting 70% (if I remember correctly) of the available points, and presumably they have a dictionary of allowed words which shouldn't require much upkeep
