Simply an amazing, beautiful puzzle.
I loved this puzzle. It didn't take me long to solve 22A (with help from crossings) and then I was on my way. I found the theme entries relatively easy but what I really enjoyed was all the clueing in the rest of the puzzle, which I thought was outstanding. And the obscure trivia is not so obscure if you're not still wet behind the ears. I'm 89, Tom Lehrer was big in my college days, so no problem there. Same with Sam Snead.
@Lynn I absolutely agree about the constructor comments. Perfectly good use of the space. I hope someone knows the answer.
I think your interpretation for the answer for 8D may be a bit off course. I don't play chess but in the game of checkers, when your piece reaches the back of the opposing side a second checker is put on top of it and it becomes a king, able to roam the board at will. That's how I interpreted that clue.
@MF I absolutely agree with you. In fact, I feel strongly that the rebus answers are better. I didn't bother to check further but asked for a puzzle reveal after I was told one or more of my answers was incorrect. When I saw no rebuses, I felt cheated.
@Steve L you're absolutely right. And you saved me from writing an explanation. When I finally realized they were looking for "schlumps," I filled it in begrudgingly, knowing it was wrong. But otherwise a fun puzzle.
