Thanks, Mac M., for a fun puzzle! People, your daily New York Times crossword challenge is not the end of the world—whether you think it’s fantastic or simply not your cup of tea. There’s plenty more to worry about than whether you were challenged in precisely your preferred way on a particular day. I always marvel that anyone can construct a crossword puzzle, let alone one with a theme. For someone still in high school or college, it’s an especially impressive feat! And this puzzle was unusual in carrying its double-M theme through both the answers and the clues. I’m glad The Times encourages new constructors. I could never create a crossword puzzle in my lifetime, but I love having a range of puzzles each morning—some I can whiz through and others I can’t finish at all. I’m also glad that talented young constructors are coming along to keep the tradition alive. May The New York Times crossword continue well beyond the lifetime of every current reader!
This was a super enjoyable, most clever puzzle! Looking forward to many more from Danny Rooney. He has a gift!
First time ever I gave up and came to the explainer first to understand the theme, even though I got the OM in a few crosses. I’m with those who just don’t see chance and chants as sounding alike, after living in NY, CA and MA.
Though I got the PHI rebus, my tired little brain still couldn’t quite figure out what was going on here to make it all acceptable,
@Eric Hougland Thank you, Eric. I might just give it a try!
@JohnWM I wonder if the constructor was originally planning the clue to be “______ Citizens bank” to recognize the protest movement started last fall against that bank which finances companies that build ICE detention centers. The clue might have been seen as too political, or this growing movement not yet well-known enough for a Tuesday.
@G Useful to know. The movement started with two people standing in front of one branch in Boston in November, and then the De-ICE Citizens Bank Coalition formed in December or January and has been growing since then. On June 6 there will be about 100 rallies in front of the banks in about 15 states. Rachel Maddow has covered this movement a couple of times, but it is taking time to get widely known. Citizens has been financing two huge private prison companies that operate ICE detention centers, one of them being Delaney Hall where the recent hunger strike and protests have taken place.
