As long as we are making reference to Geneva using French nomenclature, "Genève" does NOT refer to the lake en Suisse. Les Suisses call it "Lac Léman".
Loved working through the themed clues (once I figured it out, I swear my neighbors could see the light bulb go on)! The northeast corner gave the most stubborn trouble, though. I had to read (alot) about Al Capp but apparently not enough because SCHMOO completely evaded me. Plus, despite knowing all about mens rea, I was stuck on STAND for [Trial Figure]. I finally resorted to coming here to get SCHMOO, and then the crossing of INTENT and STAND made perfect sense. This was a fun one.
The northeast corner was my bane. I had never heard of...nor have I ever eaten, I presume...AREPAS. I was married to CREPES so devotedly that I came here to ask for input as to why CREPES was an acceptable answer for a clue featuring queso (my polyglot mind was boggled). I finally stumbled on the right answer thanks to Nancy in NYC. I was also stuck on a bakery association with "icing"; despite my Canadian ancestry, hockey never occurred to me. Glad I found NHL, along with insight about it, here as well. Good puzzle.
@Jane Wheelaghan I suppose it's ALUM as in "class of..."
If I'm not mistaken, an Abaya is a women's garment; men wear dishdishas.
This felt like a Monday puzzle.
Is the rebus at 39D/33A supposed to not work?
