My mother used Prell. I can smell it in my mind! Remember the old commercials where the lady put a pearl in the bottle & you watched it go down … very slowly? What a trip down memory lane!
I find it irksome that some folks found this too easy. There are all levels of people doing the puzzles, beginners, etc., so how can a puzzle suit everyone? It’s like trying to describe a smell. (See what I did there?) The crossword is not an Olympic sport. Would you say, “This long jump was too hard” or “this marathon was a piece of cake?” It’s all a matter of degree. No one is forcing you to do the crossword, so why complain? Some are easy, some are hard. I guess I need to stop reading the comments. you kids need to get off my lawn.
@Heidi I was up all night checking my phone for flash flood warnings, which are all around us here in Central Texas. My dog was up with the fireworks. It was a terrible night, and still raining. We are on a high ridge but it will be hard to go anywhere today. The NYT puzzle was a good distraction but lots of obscure stuff (to me anyway). Please pray for our state and for the families who are dealing with the unthinkable.
@Remy. Totally disagree. I look forward to Sundays because while they are challenging they’re usually doable. Just the right amount of challenge for me, and as someone already said, there’s more time for most to solve on a Sunday.
I’m pretty knowledgeable about broadway musicals (my sisters and I used to belt out Funny Girl songs) but I have never heard of this one. When I finished the puzzle I thought the picture was a truck or some kind of vehicle. But I’m never one to complain about not knowing something in a crossword. I just chalk it up to education. Puzzle itself was enjoyable in and of itself.
@Bee Winberg kale used to be a fancy garnish for fancy buffets until the kale growers decided they weren’t making enough money so they brainwashed us to think it was edible.
@I Was Saying Boo-urns. It’s a ski term. A straight downhill run.
I would call myself a B minus solver, and I was able to finish this one in less than 30 minutes, no lookups. It was satisfying to see that some regulars found it chewy … does that mean I’m now a B+ solver? Proper nouns were easily figured out with the crosses. Going to look up Grace Hopper!
@Mean Old Lady. By a stretch, I suppose, you are spinning the yarn around the crochet hook and around your fingers.
This one just flowed from my pen (er, finger) with hardly a single snag. Liked it very much. I realize that “your mileage may vary” but … and there are plenty of puzzles that have really puzzled me (see what I did there?) but this was a winner for me! Service to foster parents was a great misdirect!
@Richard coincidentally I just bought a poster for my collection of vintage advertisements - the one for the production of MADAMA Butterfly at La Scala in Milan. I thought at first it was that way because the opera was performed in Italy. I left it blank to let the crosses decide.
@Steve L. You must read “Killers of the Flower Moon” - the book before the movie. The protagonist in the movie was nominated for an academy award. It’s part of our American history that we didn’t learn in social studies. Then read about the Tulsa Race Massacre (not related to the Osage) but very sad. Lots going on in Oklahoma back then in the 1920’s.
@Rich in Atlanta. My parents raised us with Tom Swifties. We all have a wry sense of humor!
@CaptainQuahog it’s an educated guess, right?
Two ops? I guess ok since they are short for different things: operations and opportunity.
@Carrie - apparently they lie about a lot of things. Seems counterproductive to me, as when you meet in person the lie may be a deal breaker. Would be for me if I was in that universe.
Now I need a midnight snack. A nice bowl of cereal will hit the spot! Silly rabbit! Trix are for KIDS!
@Steve L. You’re not the only one. I never got on the reality show train (Shark Tank and others). But I guess plenty of people did!
Perfect amount of crunch for me [she said, putting another spoonful of cereal in her mouth]. 😁
@The X-Phile well the name is a saint, after all! And there are a bunch of seminaries and convents there so … as for the red bird, don’t know.
@Grant. I don’t get all the hype/chaos/screaming about her. Don’t think she is THAT great a singer. Out of the league of Adeles and Celines. Kinda like the emperor has no clothes. Anyway, I’m like you. Enough already!
@Mean Old Lady. Had mine done last July and definitely the prehab helped. The posthab was pretty gnarly though!
