I get the complaints about too many clashing consonants but for me it was refreshing to see more currently relevant cultural entries like TSWIZZLE, VRHEADSETS, DOJA, POKEBALL, TTYL (text speak) rather than references from 50s and 60s that I have no clue about. Doubly awesome that it’s a double pangram. Kudos to the constructors!
I thought there were too many clunky fillers, abbreviations, and obscure proper nouns - IRR? LEU? DEY? NOOR? INREM? GARR? PCBS? SINO? NEA? Many of these were deducible but I felt there were just too many. The theme was cute though.
Is it just me or are Tuesday puzzles harder these days? So many obscure clues (some of them, I know the words but not in the way they’re clued) and proper nouns for me, granted I could manage most with crosses. ISOLDE, NIP, BARD, DAR, DARKSHADOWS, DANDER, TALESE, OKIE, ROD. Too many for Tuesday imho
Too many obscure proper nouns and sketchy theme makes this unsatisfying. On the theme, I guess what the constructor wanted was all signs point to yes? But why is the phrase itself (sign) in the clue? It should’ve been “what all circled answers point to”
Anyone else read 36D as CAME RASHY? Took me a bit 😆
Way too tough for a Tuesday! I like the clever theme but I didn’t like some of the fills, especially the crossing of 18D, 21A, and 5D
This was a breezy solve, which I enjoyed, but I didn’t get the theme even after having solved it.
Didn’t know either BAS-relief or BOFFO so that cross was the last to come together but otherwise a fun and clever one
Thank you for this delightful puzzle! I now live in California but Pittsburgh is the first city I lived in when I came to US decades ago. This puzzle brought me back to the fond memories of the city. Also remembered another favorite Pittsburghese - ‘n’at!
I’m ok with the new app design except one major complaint. The color codes for the solve progress for each grid are way less intuitive. What I mean is, in the old design you were able to quickly grasp which grids you have solved by the color and fill of the color (gold, blue, half-filled blue, etc.). Now everything is on the blue background so this is less easy to catch at a glance. I hope I’m clear and the design team reconsiders the color scheme.
Overall I had to look up three proper noun answers (3D, 5D, 35D) and the southeast corner was the last to be filled in but I was so pleasantly surprised at the yellow grid icon and music at the end. I’m so proud of myself for this progress! I’ve been solving regularly for maybe three years or so? This much progress was unthinkable when I started. Not to get too corny but crossword encourages me to stick to day-to-day efforts, however small it may be, in life in general. Thank you NYTXW for showing me this world.
@Embee ah! This was the only one I had wrong before coming here for help. I had NaOMI just because it looked like a common name. Thanks for starting this :)
@maria. Down entries are supposed to be read with both letters in the rebus, in this case TWEED
Ok I somehow ended up with coNDoM for 8D and wanted this to be the right entry for a while lol
I’m confused how TAMALE is clued as a Tex-Mex treat. From the crossings I had a thought it might be TAMALE but didn’t think it was Tex mex. It seems like the definition of Tex Mex may be a bit vague but to me it’s Americanized Latin American cuisine and I thought tamales squarely came from Latinos.
As an engineering nerd, I LOVED this puzzle. TIL Hawking died and Einstein was born on this day. And to include them to plank PIDAY on the sides?? Not to mention all the other math references. Simply amazing!! Thank you and congrats to Jeffrey!!
Puzzle was fun, maybe a tad tricky for a Monday. I’ve never heard of the revealer but it wasn’t an issue. But calling this a “philosophical principle” seems like a stretch to me.
Loved this one! Figured out the theme by first getting the revealer and that helped filling out the theme entries. I’m pleasantly surprised I didn’t have to look up any hints or googling to complete this. A tad bit tricky but gettable, overall a breezy and fun one.
I’m happy I got this solved with only one googling. Tough but mostly fair. My biggest gripe was SLOPPYKISS - imo cluing this as an overly warm welcome is a big stretch, even with a “maybe”
@Andrzej Sorry for your loss. I’m 44 as well and I’ve already lost a few used-to-be-close friends like you did. Hope you find ways to grieve
@Phil Agreed. For me, it was too many phrases and proper nouns unfamiliar to me or too difficult to get even with crosses. And I should add this was true for both the entries and the clues themselves
@kkseattle Agreed on the tough NW. I had to resort to today’s column for PEEPER and that did the rest for me.
@Mike As soon as I filled that entry in I played the song. Timeless. RIP Mangione
@Bill in Yokohama What I’ve heard is X sounds like “kiss” so it stands for kiss. And yes O stands for the arms wrapped around when giving a hug
Not a fan of this one. I think the theme is a bit of a stretch - the revealer clues are double opposites, not negatives. Plus many glues and proper nouns that I didn’t think were either elegant or easy such as AMAS, IVEY, AGHA, SHOD, ATIT. Never heard of RIGAMAROLE but a fun one to learn. I was able to complete the puzzle with crosses and trials and errors but didn’t leave feeling great.
Ha! This was a timely, fun puzzle after a cross-country flight. Didn’t even realize the April fools aspect of it. Loved it!
@Steven M. I agree, this was way too difficult for a Tuesday. Too many obscure references that I had no clue about and I had to resort to googling multiple times, which is rare for me on a Tuesday.
@Jack G H I knew DEKE but struggled on a lot of other proper nouns and obscure entries such as APBS, PERSEIDS, SOUR/SKOR (I didn’t know these and had SOUL/SKOL), KENO/KLEE. This puzzle was not only tough but not fun for me
Easy breezy Wednesday. I didn’t know about King’s It (although it sounds familiar) but wasn’t a problem at all. Maybe a bit too easy than what I expected but not complaining!
@Crono TOTs as in little kids. With sticky fingers
This was breezy and fun to solve, maybe a tad too easy for a Wednesday
@N.E. Body agreed. It looked like a nu to me
@SP yeah don’t want to be that person but this was not fun for me. Well at least I got DAVID BOWIE and DREW BARRYMORE without looking up but the other two, I had no clue and it made this a slog even after figuring out the theme.
@Vaer. I was also skeptical of this premise UNTIL I saw today’s mini…
Southeast corner tripped me up. LOG clued as a *daily* record made this tricky - I had LOw as in daily low - any repetitive records can be a log, not just daily. The theme didn’t quite click for me either, although I can read music pretty fluently. Just not my jam today!
This was a cute idea, pretty fun to solve, and I am not necessarily against rebus puzzles but the stuffed crust just looks too ugly I’m sorry…
@Nitpicker same here! When I finally figured this out, I giggled internally. I’m surprised the editors first rejected it!
