How do you want your steak? Must be TAd rARE, because of course level means the score is TIEd. oH OK! Now I’m excited to learn about a new exotic dish called GoSSTArION SUSHI! Wait, could it… AH.
Agree about the fun, but with so many rebuses (rebi?) I wish the “rebus” button was on the first/main screen keyboard of the iOS app. All that clicking made me hungry!
I’ll add that I’m aware a “high chair” is also a baby chair or feeding chair, but also sometimes written as highchair. Since this was intentionally written as two words I don’t think the “?” was needed. Aaand just realizing that wow, I need some new hobbies. :)
Comment for NYT Games App: Thanks for the blinking “info” heads-up about viewing the puzzle today. However the issue is again with the dark-mode option where any extra markings, like the circles today, are very hard to see (even in the updated app). Could the app put those markings in light blue or white while in dark mode? Thanks. Otherwise great fun puzzle!
Kudos to you all who breezed through. One nit: why the question mark in the clue for 6A? Those are actual high chairs. There’s no play on words or double entendre there. That “?” actually kept me from solving 10D for a while since I refused to start it with the too-obvious L. (10D, meanwhile, was a fun clue and perfect use of “?”)
Anyone else have fun with this up until the recently news-making OOPSIE? Another joy undercut by a reminder of unserious people doing serious harm… Sorry for the digression, apart from that a delightful puzzle, even if the Greeks named Eritrea before the “Latins”.
App enhancement request: can the special symbols, like circles, be a different color in “dark mode”? Black is very tough to distinguish from dark grey… I was about to say here (i.e. complain) that the anagrams today were random and not really “circling”, but then saw that Gameplay mentioned the circled letters. Aha.
@john ezra fun summary. LA city on the NA coast is a mere 3.8 million people. Grows to 12 million and slightly larger than LIMA if you include all LA county and most of Orange. But it would take a Sunday grid to fit GREATERLOSANGELES.
@Daniel. Then how about “rebi”?
Finally got a foothold in the southwest corner and worked outward. Satisfying solve.
@N.E. Body 1/4 is also twenty-five percent. But there is NO QUARTER (aka “twenty-five” in a rebus circle/coin) there.
Didn’t help me that “Take it down a notch” also fit the theme answer… which I thought I was very clever to guess right away with only the first T crossing. So even while subsequent crossings weren’t working on that column I was looking for Thursday-puzzle-solving ways to bend the answers “down a notch” to make them work. When the H for OAHU was all the way at the bottom I thought “too many notches”.
Any quibbles are forgotten and forgiven after solving FINEST HOMER. So good.
Oy. The guys on the ‘Fill Me In’ podcast might blow a gasket over the App interface in this one. So many varying experiences in what I read from others here, and mine was different still: - iPhone dark mode, and I saw faded circles as I solved. Got hung up quickly in the NE around the singer/sunken city, didn’t know the gimmick yet. - Then solved the hint clue in the SE and had the nice aha moment. I wasn’t sure if I needed to enter the Ts or not so I put them in only on that NE corner just to stop my forward/back buttons from stopping in those squares as I navigated. - At some point several minutes after that I left the app for a bit, and when I went back into the puzzle suddenly all the other Ts were all there in bold. Wha-huh? Was it because I solved the hint clue, and left and went back? Weird logic. - Anyway kept solving but ended up putting in Ts behind the existing Ts, again to aid in navigation not stopping there as I scrolled through clues. And the finish was declared correctly. Based on my experience and imagining the code behind this App, I’m guessing that people having issues where the app is not declaring a solve in some interfaces have accidentally entered a different letter behind one (or more) of the prefilled Ts… easy to do if there’s something blocking the square.
@JB in the app you should see a “More” button on the on-screen keyboard in a corner, click that, and then click “Rebus”. Or instead of doing that you can do like some other folks and just come here and complain whenever there is a puzzle with Rebus answers. :)
@Margot (@jenesaiswha) agree. I was starting to wonder who SDS are at a commencement.
After spending a long time on the top right I’ll need to learn more about antidepressant drugs. Especially as I was sure the plot was fOILed.
@Jennifer if the T squares are prefilled and bold you might try deleting anything behind that square and entering a T yourself. The prefilled T might be covering a mistaken different letter?
