Brilliant! I’m not even halfway done with the puzzle yet, but laughed so hard that I had to come here to comment. The top half was an easy fill, but I was wondering what the OOs had to do with the SH words. Then I got to GOD SHAVE THE KING, and thought, that sounds like something Sean Connery would say — and OMG that’s it! I counted the number of OOs, and true enough, there were 7 of them. What a fantastic tribute to my favorite Bond! I’m now going back to finish the puzzle and savor every minute of this genius construction!
I’m not familiar with US immigration terms, so I got stuck at EMEND vs AMEND.
Just realized — I haven’t heard or used the word COMPUTER for quite awhile now. We usually just say laptop, desktop, PC, Mac, tablet, server, etc. Nowadays the only time I hear COMPUTER is when I’m watching Star Trek.
@Michael Weiland Same! I’ve always pictured ROY G. BIV as very colorful person, with a multi-hued wig and bright clown clothes. The only mnemonics I used in grade school were “Every Good Boy Does Fine” (in music class), and “My Very Elegant Mother Just Sat Upon Nine Porcupines” (in science class), which, sadly for Pluto, is not in use anymore.
@Marshall Walthew I think about WHAM every December when I do some holiday shopping at the mall — in fact I just thought about them last Christmas!
I’m ashamed to say, I thought 16A was about a girl named ALLY who KNOWS things. Thank goodness the Wordplay column cleared that up for me.
@J.S. Upper left is where I got stuck too. It’s like the cluing was deliberately made more vague, just to give us a challenge. The clue for UNZIP should have been just “open one’s teeth” instead of “open with one’s teeth”. And the clue for I CAN TOO could have been more specific, such as “You’re not the only one able to”
@Cat Lady Margaret That’s how I read it too! I wrote MASK, perhaps he wore one to hide his moving lips. Not a very good ventriloquist, though.
Those were the last 3 squares I filled in too.
@Tony Same here! I lost several minutes trying to find out what I had spelled wrong. I’ve always wanted a MOOD STONE to go with my lava lamp and flared jeans!
LAMBASTED was the last word I filled in because it made no sense to me, and yet I got the happy music anyway.
@DIVAS IVLIVS I read the column to look for an explanation on “Hail Mary’s path”, but it appears to be the wrong PATH. Perhaps Deb was thinking about adding that answer (ARC) to the list of tricky clues.
@Kate P Same! That was a sneaky one. The squares could have been a bit more slanted.
