Sorry but IMHO this one was more annoying than fun. No matter how clever the reveal, if it doesn’t function as an actual crossword puzzle during the solving, it just feels unsatisfyingly gimmicky.
If you are going to have 28 (!) clues that can only be solved in one direction, you’d better make sure that there aren’t two possible solutions to any of them! 104 Across, Block (up) can be solved either as JAM or DAM. And if you are unfortunate enough to choose the former, good luck figuring out why the puzzle won’t solve. This one goes into the category of more annoying than fun.
Glad some of you liked it - but for me, way more annoying than fun.
Godspeed Deb! I have come to think of you as a welcome fellow traveler in the ways of crossed words. Some people just get the magic, and some just don’t. Thank you for being a treasured part of the NYT experience.
More annoying than fun.
Really enjoyed this one. Many of the aha moments coming with exhalations halfway between groans and peals of laughter - the highest praise possible for an NYT Sunday puzzle. Well done!
@Greg In NYC - try 104 across being DAM, not JAM. Only took me hours to figure that one.
