To me, it was always “LA LA LA LA LOLA”. I have been a huge Kinks fan for well over 50 years but, for various reasons, never warmed up to Lola and avoid it whenever I can. That is hard to do one is inclined to listen to music from the era. Nevertheless, for the sake of weighing in on the controversy, I decided to give it a fresh, careful listen. It was a surprise to me, but what I heard was “LUH LUH LUH LUH LOLA”.

When I was a kid, there was a certain type of dragonfly we called sewing bugs. If they were around, you had to make sure you kept your mouth open so they wouldn’t sew it up (similar to what is referenced in Caitlin’s column). It was this memory that helped me fill in 29A (with my mouth open) after having filled a couple of crosses.

@Jeff Z I share your lament. And why do so many rappers names begin with “Lil’”?

I liked the puzzle a lot and found it to be as challenging as most Thursday puzzles. My solve time was over my average time. It differs from most Thursdays in that it doesn’t really have a trick to it. The theme is a play on common phrases, which is more of a Wednesday or Tuesday thing.

@Aaron Teasdale I am awed by the speed at which some can solve the puzzles. I play for speed only on Monday puzzles, but even when every answer comes to me immediately, I find it physically impossible to key in all the letters (I use the app) in less than double the time some some solvers claim for solving the same puzzle.

@HeidiSunday morning cartoons? When I was a kid, many years ago, Sunday morning on all of the three channels available to us was dedicated to religious programming. The closest thing to cartoons was Davey and Goliath, a claymation series about the antics of a boy, Davey, and his talking dog, Goliath. It had a religious theme as well, but was animated, so it naturally caught the attention of kids. I remember my sister saying that Sunday morning TV was punishment for not going to church.

@Splat”tonne” is not the British spelling of “ton”. A tonne is 1,000 kilograms. A ton is 2,000 pounds.

@John Carson I was reading the comments on a review of White Lotus and the commenter complained about a previous post being filtered because he used the last name of one of the actresses. Her first name is Carrie.
