I really enjoyed this puzzle and wound up solving it almost 28 minutes faster than my average time for a Saturday... To my surprise! I started with just 2 words on the across grid, but somehow, the downs made it doable. I'm also happy to be introduced to this composer. Excellent puzzle!
It seems I was the only one who never saw the 8 bonus clues, despite the reference to a note. Maybe they didn't show up in the app for Android? I didn't have trouble solving this one - though I agree about the spelling of Bocce.
@Nat K yes, and I'll add that it's possible to avoid condescension when people ask for an explanation after having solved the puzzle and still don't "get" an answer. Having trouble with what seems to have been an especially difficult puzzle for a lot of commenters here doesn't mean that one is completely ignorant about how these puzzles work and in need of a virtual lecture on cluing.
Gen Y made sense to me, but what was the meaning of 57D?
@Bridget same - I had the whole puzzle except the lower left corner...added a lot to my time on this one
@Rebecca Hill oh, I get it now. I didn't see the final space. Looked like only two missing letters on my app.
@Rice and I was looking for Steve Ditko or Stan Lee, but Spiderman is fair and helped me solve the whole thing once I finally looked up as I was erasing my attempt at rebus entries
Agree with everyone else - toughest puzzle in a very long time, and I thought it would end my streak. Thanks to my friend at the music fest who said "stale beer" to me when I was stuck, I finally got some momentum
