I have been working in the film and TV industry for 25 years. Pan is left and right movement only. Lots of ways to clue this without getting the meaning of the word wrong. Very disappointing from the NYT crossword. (Next you’ll be asking the camera to tilt left.)
@Dan Pan is only misused universally outside film and tv production. If you ask a camera operator to pan you will be disappointed if you are expecting a closer shot. I just expect more from the NYT
While I love when puzzles have this kind of wordplay, the instructions are backwards OCTOPI directs the solver to change OC to PI not the other way around. Why not make the second (the modified word) SPIKED so that the instructions make sense? I do love.the concept though
