@Rahul S the erg and the joule measure the same thing, the way the foot and the mile measure the same thing. The erg is smaller, therefore the erg is part of a joule. Complaints about metric clues should focus on “Le Mans race unit: Abbr.” My first thought was LAP but that’s not an abbreviation. The correct abbreviation for kilometer is KM. I thought about KMS but “unit” is singular. KIL could be the abbreviation for anything 1000 times a base unit: kilogram, kilojoule, kilowatt, kilobyte, or maybe kiloerg?
@Niall I’ve rarely been outside the US in more than 50 years and I got TOAST from the crosses but with only the E it took me a long time to think of OVER. Might be specific to the constructor’s corner of America?
@Kate ugh, because I don’t know 12th night & didn’t have many letters for SEBASTIAN, I was thinking of an oven and tried MEAT. When I got enough letters to figure out the character name and realized the third letter was E, because I didn’t get the clue I figured the first two letters must be wrong also. Finally guessed MEET and got the screen saying I had solved it so came here to find out why, so I also learned I live in the same town as the constructor. Interesting.
@Matt and wiktionary says that usage is dated
@Kelsey more Americana, anyone who learned about Theodore Roosevelt in US history in high school has heard the phrase.
@Crevecoeur thanks for helping me finish without revealing anything myself. I knew it couldn’t be HHUP but didn’t think of WHUP. Readers from outside the states are complaining about clues only Americans will get and it sounds like you really had to be from the South to get some of them. At least I’m in the right place for Crazylegs but still had to look him up.
