NPR just announced that NY Times Puzzle Editor Will Shortz had a stroke on February 4. He is recovering and was well enough to speak at the conclusion of the Sunday Puzzle. I’m sure the thoughts of puzzle-lovers everywhere are with him.
Congratulations, Kenneth! May you find acceptance from your family, love from someone special, and joy from composing and solving puzzles.
Regarding 1A — the gram is not a unit of weight, it is a unit of mass. The metric unit of weight, or more accurately force, is the newton.
@Disco Volante I’ve got two classmates who became newsworthy. One got national attention when he was running a used car lot and ran a “buy a car, get a free gun” promo. The other, who bullied me in elementary school, is now in prison for murdering his mother for money to buy drugs,
@J-J Cote I think the NPR announcement was the first public mention. I had noticed his absence from the Sunday Puzzle the past weeks and had been Googling for news about him. I’m a little surprised the Times hasn’t mentioned it. He’s got a right to his privacy, of course, but it’s public knowledge now, and by his choice.
A rebus? On a WEDNESDAY? There should be laws against such horrors, if not a Constitutional Amendment.
I despaired when I first saw the grid with its lack of black squares and began to curse cruel fate when I finished my first pass through the Across clues and had only completed a handful of short entries. But my spirits improved when I went through the Down clues and completed a goodly number, leading me to be able to figure out the top third of the entire puzzle. In the end, I solved the entire thing in 9:25 (admittedly, after using Check Puzzle a few times, but I almost always do), only about fifteen seconds over my best time ever for a Friday and found the whole thing very enjoyable. Now, if I just didn’t have to WORK today…
