I'm disappointed :(. This might be the first time I've solved the thing without understanding the theme. And no wonder, I'm from India, I don't pronounce the word chance the way Americans do. And I can't remember another time where a phonetic hint like this was constructed in such a parochial fashion :(.
@B Amen! My streak is nowhere near that long (was in the 200s until our epic trip to Machu Picchu this fall - we did the Inca trail hike with no connectivity for 4 days...blissful, but...). Glad to hear that this is in your top-50 lamest, certainly in my top-5!

@Anonymous parochial in the sense that it took a very limited view of how words are pronounced. generally, i've found that, besides the trivia clues, which tend to draw heavily on American culture, the crossword tends to be approachable for folks from all over the world.
