First, panini and cannoli are both plural in Italian, so in theory that should be "melts" for the answer and "treats" for the clue. Second, a panino is the Italian word for sandwich. It doesn't have to be heated or even have cheese.

In Russian and Ukrainian, there is no "t" at the end of borsch. I never understood where the "t" in English came from. Thanks to today's puzzle I got curious and finally looked it up and found out it apparently came into English via Yiddish, which first added the "t." (Also I'd say done well, it's more tangy than sour. If you want a sour soup from that part of the world, try solyanka, but be warned.)

@Brendan I agree. It could have been easily fixed by the editor ("treats" instead of "treat").
@Francis I'm just here to say your location made me laugh (and then cry, of course).
but "dropped like flies" doesn't mean to make a mistake... the double meaning throughout the puzzle doesn't work here... my husband and I were sure it was "dropped like balls"... though I guess that has a triple meaning
