When I saw the theme was related to the faces of a die, I was hoping one of my favorite words would find its way into the puzzle: QUINCUNX, which is the name for the arrangement of 5 pips on a standard die or domino. Alas, no dice!
@CaptainQuahog When I was growing up, my father always sang it as 🎵When the eel swimming by / is as big as your thigh… 🎶 How fun to hear another variation on the theme! 🎵 When your post doesn’t show / Or it’s going real slow / that’s an Emu 🎶
@Mean Old Lady Please share one of your haiku here! (I believe the proper plural of haiku is haiku.) I’m sure many of us would love to read some of your work. I’m reminded of how I used to write some haiku back in my high school days. I’m not sure I still have those notebooks, but I can remember one particularly cheeky one: Flitting dragonfly Lands in focused beam of light Burning ball of bug Evocative, no? Perhaps someday I shall return to my roots and start writing poetry again.
@Nancy J. What really makes it amusing to me, whether or not it was intentional by the constructor, is that the 42 across clue could be a response to the inclusion of the word “you” RIGHT THERE NEXT TO IT in the down! *I* certainly didn’t expect to see YOU there, and yet there it was!
@Nancy J. But it is a phrase, from video games! As one progresses through a series of different stages, or worlds, one occasionally encounters fiendishly difficult enemies that must be defeated before one can pass on to the next stage or world of the game. These sections are called Boss Levels, as they are a Level in which you must beat a Boss enemy. The more you know! *Shooting star graphic!*
@Oikofuge I’m surprised no one else has mentioned the moment in Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods where the two princes, during “Agony (reprise)”, have the following exchange: CINDERELLA'S PRINCE yes, but even one prick- It's my thing about blood. RAPUNZEL'S PRINCE Well, it's sick! CINDERELLA'S PRINCE It's no sicker Than your thing with dwarves. RAPUNZEL'S PRINCE Dwarfs. CINDERELLA'S PRINCE Dwarfs... RAPUNZEL'S PRINCE Dwarfs are very upsetting.
