I thoroughly enjoyed the trick to this Thursday puzzle, but as a military historian I feel compelled to point out a glaring error. The clue for 6D refers to the song “Over There,” published in 1917. The answer to the clue, “GIs,” while it does refer to American soldiers, saw its first use as a noun in 1943 according to Merriam-Webster. American soldiers in WWI were known as doughboys. They weren’t called GIs until WWII.
Deb, you’re off track regarding Safety School. The seniors are high school seniors and a safety school is one you apply to knowing you’ll easily be admitted to if the school you really want turns you down. I can definitely see your interpretation, though. A super-fun Friday puzzle! I was just a tad slower than average. I like tough puzzles and this felt like some of the late-week,puzzles I’ve been working in the archives.
