I was reminded of my late beloved father, Norman Goren, by three answers in today's crossword. Norm, who was born almost exactly 103 years ago, was a bridge-playing (52A) opera-lover (54A) with Israeli relatives (51D). Goren is a common surname in Israel but uncommon in this country; growing up in Philadelphia, I was often asked if I was a relative of the famous bridge player (I'm not). Of course, I loved this puzzle!
Jesse, congratulations on your second child and on the great puzzles you've crafted! Sorry to see you go, and hope to see you return as a puzzle maker. As for mondegreens: I was a child in Philadelphia many decades ago, and grew up in a classical music-loving family. For years I thought the conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra was U.G. Normandy (Eugene Ormandy, for the young'uns out there.)
@El-Away Thanks for My Bologna. I enjoyed getting lost in Chris Mann's corona-virus-era parodies, starting with My Corona https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojrtwXqqc6g&ab_channel=ChrisMann
@Bill, thanks for sending along the Tennyson, the Britten setting, and this recording - enjoyed all very much
@Bill Wow! loved that slur! thank you
@ad absurdum I remember the Humphrey Go-Bart!
@Chris ...and a gimme for me, unlike any clue that requires (non-classical) music or computer knowledge. Guess I'm a shoe-in for membership in the Luddite club.
@Mason I turn to puzzles to escape the stress induced by comments like this one and the inevitable parries.
