@acjones of course shindig isn't offensive. but Hindi is a little bit. one of my best friends is a Hindu who speaks Tamil (emphatically not Hindi), and I'm pretty sure she'd be mildly peeved.
agree with the chorus, shockingly easy but still fun.
i sort of intuited the gimmick right away, but even when the puzzle was done i was still looking for some hidden meaning in the shaded squares, and finding none, which led me here. i am also always noticing odd quirks of words or word combinations, but i confess AOC and PTI had escaped my notice. most recently i was pondering how "ice" can sound like "ights" leading to some very odd mistakes, e.g. my car needs new head lice; know your rice, Robin Hood men entice, etc
@Rahul yeah i had that same thought. just think what would happen if we called Saturnalia a Latin festival!
sometimes meticulousness with most clues results in confusion around the very few instances of oversight or ambiguity. because the constructor had been so on point with most abbreviations or acronyms, i didn't even consider the possibility of bbq until I got to the very end and nothing else fit.
@Andrzej bully for you. although my timestamp says 44:19, the reality is that it took over 24 hours on my brain's back burner. I found not so much enjoyment as grudging respect. it was quite difficult without requiring excessive trivia.
how about: "operate an extremely large fan in a movie scene" or: "touch ten thousand pictures of ben franklin"
@Anna I liked that clue a lot too, and it was one of the first I got. as a regular reader of the Guardian, that probably helped.
