The revealer made perfect sense but around a dozen clues were just too obtuse. Obvious NATO inaccuracy aside, in what world is a king a double-decker checker? Why? And I have never heard a rowing machine called an “erg,” although I ended up guessing it since ergs are a unit of effort, which is vaguely related.
@Paul Turner So it was referring to the game of checkers. I don’t think I would have ever thought of that. I was thinking of double-decker sandwiches or double-decker buses and trying to figure out four letter words for someone who does quality-control on them. Thank you for answering with respect unlike some other commenters.
@Grant I didn’t know that! If it was Bill Murray, doubtless they meant it as a subtle Groundhog Say joke.
Don’t think I ever ran into that spelling for “Piotr” before, although the Hindu god variant was one I’ve seen. I guess it’s a Friday, though. Unusual spellings are par for the course!
@Daily-Solver It was “Stuttgart” for me — seeing that that was the only word that could fit, while not making sense for the clue, got me hunting for wordplay.
