17A - As so often with Brit-based clues, it's wrong. A British throne is a loo. No Brit ever calls it a lav. 2D - Query this. Isn't it 'jump the pale' as in 'beyond the pale'? A pale being a fencepost, so illegal to jump over the fence. Why would it be taboo to jump over a pail?
