I loved this puzzle all the way through. I got THEENTERPRISE at the start, and continued to be amazed as all the other related hints and answers came up (pun intended). Hearty congratulations on a beautiful, astounding construction and a very enjoyable solve!
@Debra King Celebrating women shouldn't mean erasing men. We need equality, not full dominance.
@Heidi I'm REALLY disappointed that Google didn't respond "Nothing, what's new with you?" 😁
Huh. I managed to complete the puzzle without solving two of the rebuses. I came here to figure out what in the heck a "tea tey" could be, and learned that a "maongpire" was *not* some arcane Star Trek reference. That probably explains how I bested my average time!
I often wonder what exactly is defined as "sparkling fill," or other such compliments for a happily crafted crossword. This, this is that definition. It started with 6D, then 13D, 30A...and by then I had discovered the theme and was smitten. nO LAME puzzle, this.
@Phil Uh yeah, trotters and pacers are very well-known racing breeds.
@Pax Ahimsa Gethen Just dropping in a note of support, 'cause I'm sure you can use some! I hope you have a community that lifts you up, and allies that appear when and where you need them.
@Eileen I just finished it in the app. Did you follow the link in the column for instructions?
I don't often do more than skim the column, today's was at least as entertaining as the puzzle. And I really enjoyed this puzzle. It was just the right mixture of totally opaque clues and helpful crosses to make it nice and chewy.
@Bob T. I got Newark/ Paterson, Yonkers, and Baltimore. I was raised in Ohio, reside in Southern Appalachia...but my father was from Flushing. The Pendant nose and vocabulary apparently breed true!
@Rachel Hmmm, something like CAPRICAPRICORNCORN?
@Sukey Mais out! Without the "s" it indicates a generic, American designation--which is certainly not what the clue indicates. https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1994-10-27-fo-55529-story.html
@Jane Wheelaghan "Order up" is what a cook says when putting a finished plate in the pass. This irritated me, as it's said at the pass (or the server), not the plate. But it's a Saturday puzzle, so I guess we'll have to...give it a pass.
@Mean Old Lady I'm in my 50s and am very familiar with that phrase. But I've made it a point to make friends with younger coworkers to keep up with ever-faster cultural changes. Being online a lot helps with that too (if not with my sanity).
This one was pretty breezy and fun, 'til I filled in the last square and got that "almost there" message. Now I've been fly specking on and off for a couple of hours and I can't find a single thing wrong with my fill. I'm about to lose either my streak or my marbles by days' end. Is it "gooier?" "Exactamundo?" Do I need glasses? Hmph.
@Francis Oh thank you! This was the exact error I had in my grid that was threatening my gold star. My secret to making the hunt a little less stressful is to take a screenshot of my grid, so I can easily review it without worrying about the clock. It would probably be easier to just not worry about the clock, but...
@Joe Help me out--I don't understand how MEET answers that clue. Had me flyspecking until I saw your comment.
@KRB Oh thank heavens for your comment! I was in exactly the same stickiness.
@lawrenceb56 Huh. I didn't catch it, so @nk's comment saved my gold star!
@lucky13 Aaargh! I had "drier," which was the cause of today's flyspecking episode. I came here looking for a translation for "dEED TEA," having no toehold in the THC-loving culture. Again, the comments preserve my sanity for another day.
@Barry Ancona Yeah well, I about kicked myself when I realized it wasn't sOFI. Pretty sad for a (long-ago) international studies major!
Aaaarrrgh! I'm flyspecking to no avail. My best lead is the English writer whose surname Ruade doesn't seem particularly apt or English, but whose crosses all make sense to me. Any help? Or am I missing a pun?
@The X-Phile @Matt @Karl M Thanks! It didn't help that I had typed "BL9CK" in one of those teeny tiny rebus squares. But I finally got there.
@Barry Ancona Exactamundo! I'm now singing "Crossword Hero" to the tune of a jukebox favorite. 😉
@Jennifer Thanks for the insight.
@Charles I was thinking of the old hot dog vendor joke, myself m
@Joe That's where I am this morning, going over and around, and around again. Did you find your speckled fly by now?
