Well, I finally completed the 1600 Saturday puzzles in the archive this week. A little over 700 hours of happy puzzling. A huge thanks to the constructors and editors who exercise our brains over the years :)
52A Salmon Portland Chase was the governor of Ohio, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and Chase National Bank was named in his honor, though he had no affiliation with it. Huh. Read about him in Team of Rivals, a formidable man. Not many kids named Salmon these days.
Well, ‘BEERGOGGLES’ came to mind faster than ‘BEDROOMEYES’
Pierre is the only capital that does not share any letters with its state. Great trivia question.
@Jack McCullough nice to know you are in our midst, Mr Mayor! FWIW - PIERRE is the only state capitol that doesn’t share any letters with its state. Fun fact that will challenge most every trivia crowd.
Tremendously complex and fun, thank you! Bach would be proud of this Goldberg variation, and I choose to believe Jesse’s creative genius comes from a distant relation - Uncle Rube.
“Holy Cruciverbalism, Batman!”
Do yourself a favor and watch Gary Gulman’s set on how the states got their abbreviations. Six minutes of genius.
Fun PEEP facts: 1. According to Wikipedia, Dolly Parton credits her youthful appearance to eating one Peep per day. 2. Peeps are made by the Just Born company in Bethlehem PA. On New Year’s Eve in Bethlehem, they sponsor an annual giant ‘Peep drop’ to welcome the new year. Times Square has its crystal ball, Bethlehem has its giant Peep. Happy New Year!
Excellent, excellent puzzle. Thank you! The long crosses reminded me of one of the funniest comedy sketches ever - where an obnoxious brain surgeon smugly annoys everyone at a cocktail party, until a rocket scientist arrives. Worth a watch. Brain Surgeon - That Mitchell & Webb Look , Series 3 - BBC Two
41 Across played a mean 16 Across.
Just one Q away from a pangram puzzle
If the pirates had packed Certs they would have had “sparkling drop of Retsyn”. Still suffering from scurvy, but with minty fresh breath.
@Steve L Happy Hanukkah! Try putting your menorah in the freezer for a couple of hours at the end of the week and most of the wax will flake off 🕎❄️
A fine puzzle and came in at a new Friday best at a little over eight minutes. Just vibed with the clues today. Felt like Forrest Gump playing ping pong. As Old Lodge Skins says at the end of Little Big Man “… sometimes the magic works. Sometimes, it doesn't.”
Only one capital doesn’t share any letters with its state. One of my favorite trivia questions.
@Andrzej AVENGERS even out injustice
@suejean Van Gogh painted a second starry night painting currently on display in Arles. It is of the river in Arles on a starlit night.
@Atavistic Cringeworder - Common. Horse. Non. In a. Yer makin. I only count five senses but I’m sure there are more.
@suejean the title is Starry Night Over the Rhone
@Anthony took a while to sort why ‘COBNOLE’ worked. Reputed to be Will Short’s favorite puzzle. Thanks!
@Vislander sent me to check on the Clampett’s home state. According to the ever-reliable Wikipedia, apparently Jed “was shootin at some food,” in Missouri when “up through the ground come a bubblin crude.” More trivia to stash in my brain’s attic :)
