@DQ it should have been clued as the inventor 's name
@HC Tabak i thought this puzzle was too clever by at least half. and some of the answers apart from the theme were too abstruse. Not a fan
@Mike you are unbelievable. Never have you been stumped with your wordplay. I look forward to your opus every day.
it amazes me how many different ways the dreaded oreo and snl are clued. enough with them already. other than that, puzzle was interesting. I had hoped for more than 3 themed rebus type answers. I,too, was confused about the tv over the fireplace reference. I guess it s ok if the fireplace is just for show and not actually used.
I got the theme but was stumped by the Rey, rpg cross. And the eel over there didn't help.
Took me a "long" time to figure out the joke
@Felicia see comment above. the answer is fine. just clue it as the great inventor's name
@Mike you are amazing coming up with apt non mots every night. Look forward to what you come up with
@Pezhead well, i m over 60 and never saw or cared about star trek. i did this as a themeless and had no idea of the circled letters. i get it n0w
Finished puzzle. I expected double letters in the themes, but they were not consistent. I didn't see the fingers imbedded in the answers in order no less until I read the write up. Very impressive
@Ben Blackwell and it crosses adenoidal ??? ugh . what is that?? i couldnt get the third "o" there . i had good?h ... who knew ??
i found it more annoying than clever. i did slog thru it though.
Took me a while to figure out the rebus. I was stumped by Wario.. And had no idea how to spell nadiya.. Of course snl and emu were here. As well as Mr eno.
i thought the theme was very contrived trying to be amusing. The cross of uracil // danae was impossible .
@Mike how do you come up with things like this every night and so quickly??
@Andrzej in the 70 s the ny islanders won multiple Stanley cups in the nhl. Hence a sports dynasty
Gamgee Paseo... No idea that "e" was the missing letter. Liked the wiley coyote clue the best. Whether this puzzle was someone's first or thirty eighth one doesnt matter to me, as such a fact neither adds or subtracts from the solving experience. But the other puns were pretty funny too.
Wildly easy. No idea of the theme. Did it as theme less. Didn't know the ric dude of the cars, but got it from the crosses. He s usually clued for his first name.
A total pleasure. Well done with no obscure proper nouns or rap references. The cluing for the ubiquitous oreo was interesting. How many different ways has oreo been clued, I wonder??
Never heard of luchadora. That made me question whether it was Erie or cree. I wondered if MIT had a gala
took a long time to get the joke. but i dont think 32 across atop is well - edited. a to p would fit the scheme but it is just a random fill.
I think this is one of the most clever Thursday puzzles in quite some time.
@Jim no idea about Octavia e butler. Once I looked her up I was able to get everything to work out. At the bottom silent over talking was interesting
Never got the theme.too abstruse for me. Solved as a theme less. Spume was new to me
@Brian forego was one of the greatest handicap racehorses ever. Won eight eclipse awards I think
The clue for set is an interesting way of defining the word, which by the way has the most pages devoted to it of any word in the oed I believe
I don't really see how the mma answer fits the theme. It's a big stretch. The others make sense
I figured it out from crosses but had no idea what acunit is.. Air conditioning unit I guess??
@Wayne Harrison it's in fifth edition of shorter oed if you can believe it
@Barry Ancona cute. Hey, Barry I m just wondering, do you ever NOT do the puzzle? And you always one of the first posters. Impressive
initially , i did a double take on the first three prime number clue. could it be, as simple as one, two, three?? but one is not a prime number, so the clue and answer worked. I, too, liked the Tony Orlando answer the best.
Cute. But I printed the puzzle and none of the marquis clues were in italics. I has to go to my phone to find which clues were such. Then all made sense. A few somewhat proper names, but they could be deduced by the crosses
@Marshall Walthew I don't think any new cars have come with such in years.
We are not amused. May be one of the worst Sunday puzzles so far this year. Why mock how Mr Connery talks. Brutal.
easiest and fastest saturday puzzle that i can ever remember. when i got 1 across immediately , I had a nice foothold.
@Barry Ancona enough with Oreos already. How many different ways have such been clued??cute cluing cannot rescue this lazy fill. Do better.
@John Deal I had the same problem in the nw Last thing I got corrected
Some obscure proper nouns caused me trouble. And the juggling clue for Noone was quite convoluted
never heard of michael stipe. i had aviary not apiary crossing there. oh well
In the mid 1970.s when the bowmar brain came out we would make these word jokes on it with numbers. This puzzle evoked that. But the theme was so easy and trite that I didn't even bother to finish the puzzle after I filled in a bunch of the jokes.
@Curtis the movie channel I believe
I could not get hinny. The down needed the vowel in cuz.. I couldn't get the u there as I thought cuz was short for cousin not 'cause. So I missed the two letters there. Otherwise I sort of got the theme
@Laura ale is sold in a yard in pubs in the u. K. Also half yards..
Had trouble with all the Spanish words. Seems like more and more Spanish words in the puzzles recently. Diaereses was getable from the crosses but it just looked weird
@Red Carpet taiga crossing tajik on a Tuesday.. Really???
@Jive Miguel clever. i see what you did there
You either know the cartoon or you don't. The younger solvers probably will have lots of difficulties. The shape of the dark squares is clever as is the slightly shaded help.
@Dan yup it could be yipes crossing that also. I guessed yikes VS Kara but cmon do better fill on a Tuesday
