I wonder if a puzzle with this many layers was attempted in the pre-digital age. Keeping notes on the side, on paper or electronically if that works better for you, really helped get through it without wasting more time than expected trying to remember which entries were related and which nonsense letters were the placeholders for the stolen “paintings”. We have come to expect the app to handle things like this for us and when it doesn’t we grumble. This was one occasion when solving on paper might actually have been an advantage. The gibberish in the solutions made it especially difficult to spot typos and incorrect entries. I do admire the cleverness of the construction, though.
Member of team done-in-by-MOW/WARIO-cross. Needed many trips to Google to get quite a few others too. Not a favorite, but happy the video game crew had fun with it.
@Sebastian Agree that this was a struggle, even more so if you’re not marinating in American pop culture. Even some of us who reside on this side of the 16D have to resort to Google for help. Example for me: 59D crossing with the “evidence” letter of 77A. That was a low blow, and not the only one. As you’re new to the community, first, welcome! There is a convention that we observe in the comments section, and that is to avoid posting spoilers. So your last sentence should read “I’m a 37D and a duffer so I’d better avoid all 16D’s”.
