“Old yeller “ made me immediately think of the movie by that name, a total tearjerker, and that’s what led me to “crier”. Fun and funny puzzle.
@Justin and when you speed through you miss the joy of the clever clues. I actually feel cheated if I fill in a whole corner on the across and don’t get to see the down clues. Here’s for slowpokes!
“For Esme with Love and Squalor” gets my vote for best short story ever written. I reread it now and then and cry every single time.
I’m presently on a tour of Egypt and yesterday stood on the top of the Aswan Dam after visiting the fabulous Abu Simbal monument. I just love it when this sort of thing happens, and I see a little piece of my life experience in the puzzle.
Took the grandkid to the La Brea Tar Pits a few weeks ago. They have a whole wall of dire wolf skulls. Not to mention the woolly mammoths and saber-toothed cats. The tar that captured them all is still bubbling! Great puzzle—thanks!
This one fought back. I had “offhanded” instead of “throwaway” which caused that entire section of the puzzle to be a mystery. Got it without lookups but it was tough.
I was fooled at first with “pop” fly and naturePreserve but eventually got there!
I was working on “double blind” for the experiment and “all thumbs” for the revealer for far too long. So clever!
I had a handmade raggedy Ann, and the very first Barbie. My daughter had a cabbage patch kid and an American Girl doll. Lovely memories today—sometimes it’s more than a puzzle.
@Karl It’s all about looking at the same word in a different way! The way we enjoy Deb’s take on the words in the puzzle as compared to our own. We will miss her.
@Lige My husband was diagnosed last week; good to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel. This is a good community, even for those of us who lurk more than post.
@John Carson That clue got me rolling on the left side of the puzzle. I was born during my dad’s work-study program many years ago!
@MC I did the exact same thing and had to laugh at the sheer number of wrong answers. I got there with auto check which I prefer to google.
@Peter M For some reason I was heading towards Peter of Peter, Paul and Mary. The brain works in mysterious ways.
@Steve it’s all about the Utz extra dark “Specials” which are sourdough pretzels that are baked just short of burnt. Addicting.
Finished this puzzle before 8am Tuesday morning. (Good puzzle!) Clicked on the Wordplay column and it was the column for Wednesday. The first sentence was a spoiler for that puzzle. Bummer!
@Call Me Al Exactly! My rapper knowledge is seriously lacking. As for the español, we had the same book, and “Hola, Isabel” was the very first lesson. It is burned into my brain.
@CCed I like how the crossword solving portions of my brain are connected to so many other things in life. Because of this, however, today the music portion of my brain is now stuck on Sugar Ray’s Every Morning. An ear worm if there ever was one.
@KandB Yeah, me too, and I was so proud of myself for getting a great start on a Friday puzzle.
@Heidi I do the puzzle on my iPhone and changed the name in the Apple Game Center, under Customize Profile. Then I realized if I signed out of Apple Game Center the whole thing goes away! I had a really dumb looking emoji in there for some reason and I was glad to get rid of it.
@Laura Stratton so you are on the alert for some sort of trick in the construction of the puzzle.
