Another euphemism for money: kale. Much like cabbage, but less edible!
How were we supposed to know which clue wormholed to where? This one was too much of a head scratcher for me.
Did not enjoy this puzzle. Either ask me to consider homophones, OR whatever that other thing was— but not all three in one clue. Not enough fun to be the least bit instructive.
Re: “Some people also add grapefruit juice, but — and I know this will be controversial — my general opinion of grapefruit is that it is a waste of space. Your mileage, as always, may vary.” — Thank you for my first belly laugh since I don’t know when!
Very cute puzzle, Dad jokes and all. But since when do you get to count “IDYL” as a correctly spelled word? Even Wikipedia knows to add the second L
Welcome back, Sam! Missed your off-beat ability to make me laugh! As with “Overcomplication? Ambiguity? Misdirection? Don’t threaten us with a good time!” Or maybe do!
I was having trouble deciding whether “JFK” or “Ike” was the first President to go on TV …but FDR??? I don’t think so.
Must respectfully disagree with clue for “mensch.” Meaning is closer to “stand-up guy” — someone who sticks to his principles — and his friends— even when inconvenient.
@TMD I have a coffee mug souvenir from a trip to Maryland’s Eastern Shore with a whole comedy routine: MRDucks MRNotDucks OSAR…CMWangs? MRDucks!
@JohnWM POP goes the …oh.. I get it!
Here to complain about today’s Strands: solved everything but final word, the Spangram, which clearly was (Spoiler Alert!) “You’re kidding,” but it wouldn’t allow that! 6 of 7 words found, what else could you do with those letters? FIX TODAY’S STRANDS, please!
Congrats on the baby and/or toddler! But you must still be watchful, as alas, no place is completely idiot-proof!
@Helen Wright Live and learn (about so much)! Thanks for the info about Somerset!
@Mark, from BART Love it! More please!
Thank you for finally elucidating what all the fuss re: EMUs has been about!
@Petrol. You make a good point, but where there are a multitude of euphemisms, there is probably some embarrassment, as well. Maybe we like to pretend we aren’t all about the do-re-me.
I think, rather than “Baltic-speaking,” you meant “every nation bordering on the Baltic Sea.” Or at least “speaker of the Baltic language group.” I never heard it was a language on its own. Other than that, I find your comments charming.
@M&M Thank you for the work and the info but my beef is with the constructors. “Popularly,” (as opposed to rarely and with advanced technical intervention), Americans only HEARD FDR on the radio. If the clue had said “broadcast” instead of “television,” would be true but still misleading, if that’s what they were going for.
Could we please not use the name of a murdering terrorist group as the name for a “gollee isn’t that funny” perception? Thank you.
For the record, when something is “charred” it is COMPLETELY BLACK. As in CHARcoal. Not “slightly” burned.
@Barry Ancona “THX” for the lifesaving hint
Thanks for the puzzle and the ducks, but in future please clarify that you lived in Northeast Washington STATE. There is another Northeast Washington much closer to NY.
Is this Gary Larson the cartoonist in a 2nd (or maybe 3rd) career?
So sorry this puzzle happened to hit just as we woke up to news of a terrible air tragedy in DC. I cannot deal with it today.
