@Clare i've only heard very specific demographics use it, and not restricted to age. heard college age girls mention "drinks with the GIRLIES" and middle-aged women talk about "meeting the GIRLIES for brunch". as a guy i use it when i find myself hanging out with an all-female group.

@Dave Munger It's kinda like if the different parts of the US spoke different languages instead of having different accents/dialects. In India it's like that, except it's also the official language of each state. There's the south, regionally and linguistically because those languages aren't actually related to the North Indian languages. You were in Tamil Nadu, so everyone spoke Tamil, but you can go about halfway up the country and still be in South India, and go through at least 4 other languages! As a Telugu speaker in America it made me happy to see ot in the puzzle :)
