Meh! The constructors' tricks left me cold. I also have an issue with the clue "tiny slug." It's a contradictory phrase. It's akin to little giant or small expanse. It makes no sense. Some of the clues were clever, but the anadrome is a lot of work for an obtuse payoff. The final such l clue was pure gibberish. The others left me scratching my head and wondering "why bother?"
This was rough, IMHO, for a Monday puzzle. While a DIRNDL might be culturally commonplace in Bavaria, it's not part of my vocabulary. Aside from that, I also have no clue about dance crazes, not forts in different states. While I got DIAN FOSSE?, I wasn't sure of the correct spelling. All of thay made for a rough southeast corner that defeated me. Once I was off my flight, I was able to cheat and solve the puzzle.
The puzzle wasn't particularly difficult, but after reading the Wordplay, I'm still scratching my head. If the answers represent grade, they're sketchy at best. If a B is fine and a B+ is average, then the curve is skewed. It's a good idea, but a near miss for me.
@Brian If only that was rhe case. Alas, it's not.
I enjoy Friday puzzle, but hated thia one. EL CLÁSICO and A FORTIORI and entries that I would havenever hadn't chance at solving. And SISYPHEAN is too obscure for me. This was a crash ans burn for me.
@Lynn There's an assumption implied in your question that posters of negative comments want easy puzzles or dint want challenging puzzles. That sounds odd coming from an educational researcher. If "we" wanted easy puzzles, "we" wouldn't be doing the Thursday puzzles. There are more to many of the negative comments beyond "that was tough."
