@Teresa The “to” in “give to” is not necessary when the indirect object (the person or thing to whom something is given) is a pronoun. In this instance, a sentence could read, “I must give THEM X,” or “I owe to THEM X,” or (less awkwardly) “I owe them X,” where “owe to” and “must give” are interchangeable.

@Nora I’m 69, and I’m frequently called “dear” by doctors, cashiers. That strikes me as disrespectful. And don’t get me started on “young lady.”
