@Lewis The MOUE / SOLI / TUDE / STRICH zone was my last four clues and had me looking up famous Elaines - only got the rest once I found the ST for our lady who lunches.
@Dan I read it as a concept (as in, cloud nine is not literal) that refers to an emotional high. Though I had hoped it would be a weed joke, if we’re being honest.
Loved this Friday! One of those puzzles where the constructor’s sense of humor and way with cultural references just clicked for me. Two minutes faster than my average, but didn’t feel like a breeze or a snooze, just a quick little pleasure, with any blindspots covered by well-thought-out crosses. I’ve been solving all the gimmicky Sundays and Thursdays from the archives, so I may have been biased toward what a straight shot this was. Either way, more please!
A memorable debut but I Must adMit that I wish the answers were as rigorously themed as the clues
@Lewis “HYPER” was my favorite. I usually start southeast corner and it was a great intro to the theme.
@Steve L This is cool! Never looked at these before. Wonder how much the stats change by this time tomorrow. Are people solving Saturday puzzles at midnight-ish on Friday a representative sample?
@Mark Felt like a lot of names to me in this one while I was working on, it but there actually weren’t. You know when you just don’t quite jive with a puzzle creator’s sensibility? Not a bad Saturday, but the word play (or lack of) in the longer clues didn’t land for me.
Never comment on the crosswords (usually just reading the responses to commiserate about a single difficult clue) but this was delightful. My favorite ‘trick’ puzzle in a long time, and perfect for a Thursday. Thank you for a lovely solve!
