It's no fun to whip through late-week puzzles. We come here (and pay money) to be challenged, to learn new information, to laugh and grind our teeth. The past few weeks (with only a couple of exceptions), I've experienced none of that. Please return us to our Thursday, Friday and Saturday travails! Signed, Your masochistic late-week puzzle fans
Yesterday I complained about the easiness of end-of-the-week puzzles. Today, I compliment. This was a very worthy Saturday. Keep 'em coming!
David, I thought you were kidding about "Tin Can Alley"! Glad to know any of us, no matter how lofty our positions, can make mistakes :) Thanks for your steady-as-she-goes explanation of how you solved this. It tracks closely with how I went about it too. I hope we see more of you as a guest Wordplay columnist. As with all your writing, it's clear without overdoing it.
I came to the comments section specifically to see what peoople thought about "ASF" as the "intensifying suffix, in modern slang." (The "f" is NSFW, BTW). Clearly, I had no idea what the answer to 43 across ("Indian crepe served with chutney") was. I like my answer better.
Like many other readers, I never would have thought of the "clean" explanation for the "undie" clue. I wonder if Will or any of the testers thought of the image I and so many others thought of. And if the editors did not, I wonder if now they are saying, "Oh, s---!"
@Steve L I was surprised at that too. It's Italian, not French (think pizza pie, not foie gras).
@dutchirisI I agree 1,000%.
@Steve L You must be a lot of fun at parties! Just kidding ...
Shouldn't the clue "Film star whose name consists of two presidents" actually be THREE presidents? William Henry Harrrison, Benjamin Harrison, and Gerald Ford ...
@Susan D That comedy skit is pure genius.
Why are there TWO silent letters in "yacht"? Doesn't the H mean it's pronounced as rhyming with "not"? If the H was silent, wouldn't it rhyme with "fat"?
In keeping with the 6 Down theme, there is also 14 across.
@Grizzly Yeah, Deb, I'm amazed you swung and missed at that one. Seniors are the ones who apply to colleges. Most teenagers get their drivers' license before senior year. That's okay -- you get a lot more of these than I do!
