That was a difficult Wednesday for me. A lot of backtracking, rethinking, and in many cases, reentering. Something about clearing the squares in a number of sections helped me find the answer, and then I’d notice the original fill I had erased would still work. I think I really liked this puzzle. I didn’t love the theme as much as the out-of-the-ordinary clues and fill. This puzzle felt odd in a good way.
My daughter is sitting next to me as I write this. She’s seven, loves Wicked, and *she’s* the one who figured out the revealer! She thought the gravity-defying letters were really fun and was able to read them all on her own… both as written *and* with the “floating” letter. She also loves 80s fashion, and sometimes when she’s getting ready for school, I have to holler “22-Across!” at her from the kitchen (parsed a bit differently). Not joking 😂 Great puzzle!
I feel like this is the first “easy one” (for its day) in almost a week. I got a DNF on Saturday (but I’m still battling), and that’s the second one I couldn’t finish on time recently. Friday *nearly* got me as well. All that to say, I feel like the puzzle has been stepping it up lately. Wondering if you all agree. If so, I think it’s a very good thing. I don’t feel I’m a strong enough solver yet to *not* get knocked out once in a while.
@Marc I’ve been loving the post season with NO ONE ON in extras. Was up until midnight watching the 18.5 inning game on Monday. Can’t imagine many of our East Coast solvers made it to the end - but major props if you did!
Medium-difficulty Tuesdays might be my sweet spot. Quick enough to chase a fast solve, tricky enough to make me think. No better way to pass the time while staring into the black mirror.
@john ezra I think maybe so! She’s a cool little gal. Sometimes she sneaks my phone and just as I’m about to get angry I see she’s on Spelling Bee. (But I still have to pretend to be angry🤫)
Interesting take on the HALO in the new Dan Brown / Robert Langdon book - the light not emanating outward but transmitting inward. Some interesting concepts in his latest but a far cry from some of the others, IMO. I know they’re all formulaic but Angels and Demons and Da Vinci Code were good fun. This Friday puzzle is similar to a Dan Brown book. Didn’t stretch the limits of the brain but an enjoyable way to pass the time.
I’m seeing some comments that make it sound like this one was tricky for many? I had the opposite experience. Flew through this in less than half my average time while watching old Crocodile Hunter reruns. Nearly a PB. Leave to Steve Irwin to get the brain firing. Fun puzzle!
I got a personal best on this one 😎
@Esmerelda Giants fan here - pulling hard for the Jays! One more!
@Jonathan 14th is still impressive! 😴
@Mean Old Lady 🙂 That’s my go-to line. I’ll hear my son sneaking “snacks” from the pantry and have to pretend to be upset when I discover the “treat” he’s pilfered is… an orange. Yes, he eats too many, but it could be a lot worse. I’m like Br’er Rabbit: “Miles, are you having another orange? Oh no! You have to ask first.” We find his little orange-peel stashes around the house. Better than candy wrappers! (Halloween is likely to change that for the next week 😣).
@Jake G I don’t know about you, but I watched the top half of the 18th and, at that hour, I want credit! 😂
@Joe I started shortly after you. Recently I had close to a 300 day streak - there’s no way I could get 300 in a row without lookups in the 2020 archives. And going back even further? No chance.
