@Andrzej Topics I've had to learn as a result of getting into American crosswords: - Greek alphabet - Baseball - Standard US government admin forms US spelling and general culture doesn’t bother me so much because I've picked that up from media, online friends and assorted dealings to the US. Likewise with general trivia, because I love being led down rabbit holes and learning new things. It's been said that the mark of a good quiz question isn't whether you know the answer, but whether you'd want to know. I totally believe this applies to crossword clues.
What a lovely solve this was. There was something really warming about seeing this puzzle unfold at a Wednesday pace, not just around the core theme but with the round-the-world nature of the filler clues as well. Just what I needed this morning.
@Matt look beyond the theme clues. You also got dynastic history, Jewish mysticism and a trip around Europe alongside the usual US cultural references. I found this to be one of the most international puzzles I've seen here.
So much mischief in this puzzle, I had as much fun looking forward to the comments as I did solving it. Well played, Sir. Well played.
@DK whether or not it counts as a revealer clue, 30D pointed me in the right direction: LESSISMORE
@Crystal Arroyo Not an ending, but... Da-da da da da da (hey!) I! Am! Your singing telegram! Best small part ever. She left us too soon.
@SEAN I knew it from an old music hall song with the lyric "Likes my ways and claims to think 'em / What these _____ call *Fair dinkum*.
@Francis "Will Shorts on bass. He wrote this."
@Mishlev that scenario is a tee-up for a prepared snappy comeback. Did no-one ever bite? "Never mind, you'll be a total dork one day." "Rats! So close to someone caring." "Too bad. I'll go cancel the parade."
@SP thanks for the recommendation. Checking it out now.
