@Tom For positive exponents, you multiply; for negative ones, you divide 1/(the number). 3^2 is 3x3; 3^(-2) is 1/(3x3), or 1/9. When you multiply two numbers with exponents, you add the exponents. 3^2 x 3^(-2) = 9 x 1/9 = 9/9 = 3^0 = 1.

@Bob T. The problem I had with that was neither of those Disney characters technically had a goatee, by my understanding of the word. Though I expect my understanding is wrong.
