I’m surprised so many haters are in the comments. I had a blast solving this puzzle. Very fun and significantly faster than my average! Puzzles are supposed to make you use your brain, not follow a staid formula.
For me, a lot of the fun of crosswords is a challenging or unusual theme. I don’t mind a Thursday theme on a Wednesday, because it’s a unique challenge, and in my mind, that’s the entire point of a puzzle. To puzzle. That said, as a graphic designer, I’m very curious about the font used in the graphic. I loved it! (And all my puzzling has been used on this, so I’m loath to figure it out. :) )
You can really tell the boomers, gen x, and millennials, based on the gambit-revealing clue - MASH, QBERT or NSYNC.
@El Ruco Dave Brubeck was not Person of the Year (man of the year prior to 1999), which is what the clue references. The 1954 Man of the Year was US Secretary of State John Foster Dulles. Many artists have appeared on the cover of Time, but none as person of the year until Taylor Swift.
@Charlie I thought this was EXCEPTIONALLY easy for a Monday. I got through it a full 30% faster than my average, even with a typo I had to find and correct.
Some of y’all are on one today. I found this puzzle to be exceptionally easy, and I was expecting other folks to be complaining that it was far too easy, not far too hard. Y’all need to brush up on your knowledge of women in the zeitgeist if you haven’t already. And don’t @ me about being super into pop culture. I don’t even own a TV, and still knew these ladies off the top of my head.
